Water Fluoridation: A U.S. Public Health Disaster

In 2014, Israel will end the process of fluoridating water.  Israel will join most of the other wealthy Western countries in not adding fluoride to the public water supply. In fact, over 97% of the population of Europe lives in a non-fluoridated area.

Why is Israel stopping the process of fluoridation of the water supply?  The answer is simple:  The Israeli health ministry realizes that there is no data that adding fluoride to the water supply has any health benefit and they understand that water fluoridation is harmful.

In response to the Israeli decision to end water fluoridation, Paul Connett, PhD, an expert on fluoride wrote, “Zealous fluoridation promoters try to convince the American public that ‘everyone drinks fluoridated water.’  But the opposite is true.  An overwhelming number of countries do not fluoridate.  In fact, over half the people in the world drinking fluoridated water live in the U.S. We are the odd ones out.” Fluoridation is an outdated, unscientific, failed public health blunder.”(1)

Over 60 years ago, in the U.S., water fluoridation was promoted in order to decrease the number of tooth cavities.  However, even 60 years ago, there were no studies proving that fluoridation of water would result in a decrease in cavities.  Now, 60 years later, there still are no studies showing that there is any significant tooth benefit from water fluoridation.  Data from the World Health Organization show that there is no difference in cavity rate between countries that do and do not fluoridate their water.

However, there are numerous studies showing the dangers of water fluoridation including an increased risk of osteosarcoma, arthritis, bone fractures, lowered IQ, cardiovascular disease, as well as tooth and skeletal fluorosis.  Fluoride poisons hundreds of enzymes in the body.

Studying the history of water fluoridation should lead any rational, thinking person to conclude that fluoridation of the water supply doesn’t make either scientific sense or common sense.

What can you do? If your city supplies fluoridated water, it is best to filter it out.  I suggest contacting Tom Lee who put a water filtration system that removes fluoride in my house and one in my office.  Tom has been in the water business for over 40 years.  You can contact Tom at:  248.318.1554.

More information about fluoride can be found in my book, Iodine:  Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, 5th Edition.

Note: I have no financial dealings with Tom Lee.

Hi Dr. Brownstein. How are you? I’d like to ask for clarification on halogen excretion while supplementing iodine.

Upon reading some of your articles on iodine, and also some of Dr. Abraham’s, I saw some discrepancies in halogen excretion on 24 hr urine tests.

For example, Dr. Abraham’s Townsend letter claimed a 20x increase in fluoride and bromide excretion – “With 3 tablets, the
24h excretion of fluoride was 17.5 times baseline level; and for bromide, 18 times baseline level.” His article also mentioned having excreted about 24 mg fluoride total over 30 days.

In your article, “Clinical Experience with Inorganic Non-radioactive Iodine/Iodide,” your table shows fluoride excretion pre and post iodine/iodide dose fluoride excretion didn’t come close to 17.5 times baseline level.

Could you clarify on the differences in halogens excreted between each of your findings?

    Thank you.

      Dear Hazen,
Every patient has a unique ability to detoxify. That is why different testing supplies different results. My experience has shown that bromide is much easier to detoxify than fluoride, when using iodine.

Dear Dr. Brownstein, Thanks for the great fluoride blog. Fluoride is Dentistry’s Best Kept Secret. For decades, dentists from all over the world have told us that fluoride is safe, effective way of fighting cavities, but this is not the truth. The truth is fluoride is toxic, never has been proven to be safe and is not effective as they lead you to believe. Fluoride is a violent protoplasmic poison which accumulates, over a lifetime, in calcium-rich tissues in the body. Thanks for spreading the truth. Rev. Dr. Stephen A. Lawrence

Here in Portland Oregon a few city council members tried to foist fluoridation on us and our pure bull run water supply as their parting gift to the local chemical producers. Fortunately we got organized (including the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine which I was Vice President of) got it recalled and on the ballot and voted that nonsense down. You can do it too.

As you talk about fluoride in our water supply, I was listening to the news today and they announced that it is now “safe” to brush the teeth of children younger than 2 years old with a fluoride toothpaste. They are doing this due to the supposed increased dental cavities that they are now supposedly seeing in young children. of course, if parents wouldn’t put their children to bed with a bottle full of milk, juice or some other sugary drink and limited or even eliminated carbs and sugary foods, then maybe the incidence of cavities that they are claiming wouldn’t be so high. We also know that fluoride is a neurotoxin. I’m wondering if this is a ploy to increase “ADD, “ADHD” and other neurological disorders just to increase the sales of pharmaceutical drugs that not only do more harm than good but are also not necessary. Hmmmm.

Lisa, people are having success nationwide by petitioning local water suppliers to stop fluorinating the water supply. Gather signatures and provide a few studies, and this should do the trick. They will fear the threat of a class action lawsuit when they see drooling attorneys lining up for contingency work. It happened in this town of 6,000. If we don’t get loud about promoting health, things will get worse, and for the young ones, age 40 will become the new 60 as a norm.
Elizabeth, you can find someone near you by clicking in this link. MultiPure makes the best water filtration system for the the money available anywhere. I recently spent big bucks on an RO (reverse osmosis) system, and I wish I would have known about MultiPure before installing the RO. They should have a rep in your area.

Thanks Dr. Brownstein — I tackled this topic in passing in a book I wrote some time back, and I’m glad to see the evidence keeps building. Down in Brazil (at least a few years ago), they fluoridate even the bottled water — it tells you right on the bottle. Wonder how many places are doing that?

Where is he? How can I contact someone who is near me?

How can we get our government to stop this horrid practice in the U.S? This protocol along with one to add bromine to all bakery products instead of iodine makes me think someone in power wants a dumbed down and sickly population (think Big Pharma), and one that because of this will eventually not even be able to reproduce. All the teens I know (including my own), have all kinds of health problems that a short generation ago were unheard of in this age group. It is an interesting, heartbreaking, and scary thing to ponder.
