Should You Get An Ineffective, Toxic, Flu Vaccine?

I was in CVS the other day and saw the poster stating, “Flu vaccines offered here.”  I thought to myself, who would go to CVS and get a flu shot?  When I asked the pharmacist if a lot of their clients receive the flu shot she replied, “It is a busy part of our practice.”  If  you go to the CVS website, you can see a coupon for 20% off your shopping if you get a flu shot.Is a flu shot worth 20% off your shopping at a CVS store?  After reading my article, I would be interested in hearing your opinion. I  have posted numerous blogs about the flu shot over the years and wrote a long article in my Natural Way to Health Newsletter (November, 2010) about the ineffectiveness and dangers of the flu vaccine.  More information about my newsletter can be found here:

The latest blog post about the flu vaccine was posted on 9.23.12 and can be accessed from my blog page.  In that article, I wrote about how ineffective the flu vaccine was and that it should not be mandated for hospital workers.

A new study from the University of Minnesota found that flu vaccines are not very effective.  (1)  (Note:  The University of Michigan Wolverines beat them soundly in football 35-13 and, hopefully, will beat Ohio this weekend—GO BLUE!.)

University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy studied 12,000 peer-reviewed publications dating back to 1936.  Michael Osterholm from the University of Minnesota stated, “We found that current influenza vaccine protection is substantially lower than for most routine recommended vaccines and is suboptimal.”  The scientists reported that the vaccine protected adults at a rate of approximately 59% and offered little protection for seniors.

However, Mr. Osterholm still encourages people to get the flu shot.  It is too bad he missed a chance to state what should be apparent from this study.  He might have said, “There is absolutely no reason to give the flu vaccine to the elderly since not a single study has shown it to be effective for seniors.”

What about the rest of us?  If I told you a medication would have a slightly better than 50% chance of helping you avoid the flu would you take it?  Furthermore, if I told you this medication was contaminated with the second or third most toxic substance known to mankind–mercury–would that influence your decision?

I think the decision is easy—wash your hands, take vitamin C and eat good food. That is a better anti-flu regimen when compared to a toxic, ineffective vaccine.

After I finished up with my breast cancer last year, my Internist insisted I get a flu shot. I hadn’t gotten one the year before, so she told me it was necessary. I don’t want to get one this year. My husband has just been diagnosed with MDS and he doesn’t get flu shots either. I sure don’t want to give him anything I catch, but I don’t think the flu shot will prevent the flu from happening.

I am on Nature Throid because of reading your book, Overcoming Thyroid Disorders. My Internist isn’t firmiliar with that and I had to beg her for it. I have been doing really great. I love your newsletter and anything you write! I just need to be able to call your office when I have a problem. I am in Oregon and I don’t trust anyone with my thyroid!! My Free T4, TSH and Free T3 have all gone up within 2 months. How can you take care of all of us who don’t live in Michigan?! I love your knowledge Dr. Brownstein!!

I was an RN for 20 yrs. thru chronic illnesses in our family we searched out holistic practices. It is so sad that Big Pharma runs the show for medicine & the General public listens to every word from their conventional Doctor who has had no training on getting to the bottom of the illnesses & treat you like a crazy mother! I have been trying to tell friends to not get the flu shot!! I even saw one Nurse friend recently post I have the flu & got the flu shot but it’s not too bad so it must have given me an immune boost. I. Just had to say something so followed it with vaccines actually decrease your immune system & it is only a 1/3 to 50% effective. I don’t know if people get mad at me but I am sick of the lies!! I actually found out my daughter was hypothyroid thru reading your info online! Thank you Dr Brownstein! I wish you weren’t all the way in Michigan! I have a son who has all the symptoms of hypothyroid but it isn’t showing up in his blood yet & can’t find anybody to do a trial run of Armour thyroid!! It is so frustrating!!! I love all your info!

Thank you Lianne, but you were much too generous. The flu shot is, at best 17% effective, not 30-50%. 17% effectiveness means that it failed 83% of those who took it.

in my practice I have seen a handful of mothers who had the flu vaccine while pregnant and their children were born with ASD. I would never suggest it. What happened to the precautionary principle?

Curious why your article doesn’t mention regular iodine in addition to vitamin C to help guard against the flu?

I am a 62 year old when I was in the Service I was required to take the flue shot each year, All four years I had the flue shot .I would be sick in 3 or 4 days and it would last for about 5 days . I have been out of the Air Force know for Forty years now and can count on one hand the number of times that I have had the flu . I will never take another flu shot ever.

So great to read the Dr B. agrees with me!! I am 43 and I have never had a flu shot. I have a daughter that is 12. Our rule once everyone started “pushing” the flu shot…..(which is just a HUGE money-making scheme)…….is that if she eats her veggies, no flu shot needed. (good way to get her to eat more veggies too!) Needless to say, she has never had the flu shot, never been sick with flu.I think the hardest part was going to her annual check up at the pediatricians office and them asking every single time if she has had her flu shot yet. For the first few years, I would just say no, they would try and talk me into it…..and then I would say I would think about it. Then came the eye rolling from the nurses……..so now after 12 years of experience, we just say, “yes we have already had the flu shot”…… (Our own kind, made of veggies and no needle required!) We are good!

The one year I got the flu shot was my worst year for illness ever, so I’ve avoided it since then. Since I began supplementing with iodine (kelp tablets), along with major dietary improvements, I don’t seem to catch much any more. I can sometimes tell I’m fighting things (mildly sore throat for a few hours, a little more tired than usual). That’s about it. My theory is that God created viruses as an early warning system to tell us we’re vulnerable. If we listen to the early warning system, and take action, we can avoid bigger problems later. All the people on the high risk list are nutritionally vulnerable: babies, pregnant women, the obese, the elderly… It seems smarter to address the root of the problem: vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Do you feel the same way regarding the shingles shot? Thank you.

      Dear D,
Please look at my blog from 2 years ago. http://blog.drbrownstein.com/shingles-vaccine-think-again/.
The shingles vaccine does not work and is not worth the money. My mother, who just came down with shingles just ‘came clean’ to me about getting a shingles vaccine two years ago. She did not want to tell me. I told her she wasted her time and money getting the ineffective vaccine.
