Should Mickey and Minnie Mouse Be Vaccinated?

The recent 2015 measles outbreak in Disneyland has sparked an outcry against parents who choose not to vaccinate their children. Over 60 people have been diagnosed with measles in this latest outbreak.

The hysteria surrounding this outbreak is beyond me. I have seen the articles stating that parents who choose not to vaccinate should be prosecuted. Parents who choose not vaccinate have been accused of child abuse.

I say everyone needs to chill out—easy for me to write that in the midst of a foot of snow falling.

Measles is a highly infectious disease. It is very common throughout the world. In fact, it is estimated that over 20 million cases of measles occur worldwide on an annual basis. Measles can lead to severe problems including encephalitis and death. However, serious complications from measles are rare in the developed world.

I am not downplaying serious problems related to the measles virus. However, serious problems can develop from anything—a common upper respiratory illness can develop into pneumonia. People can die from pneumonia. Should parents who send their children to school with an upper respiratory infection—a cold—be accused of child abuse? Should they be prosecuted? Of course not.

Measles can cause severe complications especially when someone is deficient in vitamin A. One of the best treatments for preventing serious complications from measles is vitamin A supplementation.

The measles vaccine was introduced in 1963. You would think from the propaganda surrounding the shot that the measles vaccine was responsible for the rapid decline in mortality from measles. Think again. Look at the graph below.

Vaccine graph us-deaths-1900-19651-1024x636

The Powers-That-Be claim that vaccines markedly lowered the death rate of common childhood illnesses such as measles and whooping cough. However, you can see from the graph above that the mortality rate of these illnesses were rapidly falling before the mass vaccination campaign began.

I am not saying that all vaccines don’t work. I know some of them do. The chicken pox vaccine has clearly lowered the incidence of chicken pox. However, is that a good thing? I am not sure as shingles cases have skyrocketed since the mass vaccination of chicken pox was started. And, perhaps a child’s immune system needs to be stimulated with these childhood infections to become strong.

I travelled to Barbados last week (beautiful island with wonderful people). In the airport, one of my Natural Way to Health newsletter subscribers came up to me and told me she recognized my picture on the newsletter. She asked me a question. “Why are so many kids having all these allergies? We never saw peanut, milk and gluten allergies when we were kids—where is it all coming from?” I said to her that there are multiple reasons for this but the main reasons are that the young generation’s immune system is becoming weaker and weaker. I feel that today’s children, as compared to previous generations, are suffering from more chronic illnesses because they are exposed to more toxins and they are receiving too many vaccines at too young of an age. The vaccines contain toxic elements such as mercury, aluminum and formaldehyde. It is ludicrous to inject these toxic agents into our youth and expect good outcomes.

The MMR vaccine (MMR ProQuad) contains aborted fetal lung tissue. This original fetus was aborted due to maternal psychiatric reasons in September, 1966.(1) The MMR2 vaccine contains aborted fetal lung tissue of a 3-month old human female. (2)  These fetal cells are used because the human cells can be used to grow the measles virus. There is concern that the increase in autism that has occurred may be due to the introduction of human DNA–from fetal cells–in the MMR and chicken pox vaccines.(3) A scientific review from Dr. Helen Ratajczak, a former scientist at a pharmaceutical firm, reviewed the body of published research since autism was first described in 1943. Dr. Ratajczak stated, “What I have published is highly concentrated on hypersensitivity. The body’s immune system is being thrown out of balance..” by the increasing number of vaccines given in a short period of time. (4) She also felt that the introduction of human DNA contained in vaccines has markedly increased the risk of developing autism. Presently, human tissue is used in 23 vaccines. Dr. Ratajczak feels that the increased spike in autism may be related to the introduction of human DNA into the MMR and chicken pox vaccines. She goes on to state that the foreign DNA from vaccines can be incorporated into the host DNA which causes the immune system to fight against the foreign cells. This could start an inflammatory process that never ends, leading to chronic illnesses like autoimmune disease and allergies. Maybe this is why we are seeing so many children with severe, life-threatening allergies to common foods like peanuts.

Is the measles vaccine 100% safe? No way. I wrote about the problems with the MMR vaccine in past blog posts. I showed you research by Dr. Andrew Wakefield which found measles virus in the lymph tissue of 12 autistic children. These children never had measles, but they were vaccinated with the measles vaccine. Dr. Wakefield felt that vaccine could be causing the gut inflammation that most autistic kids suffer from. For that crime, he was prosecuted by the media and the medical profession. I wrote to you in August, 2014, (http://112.196.20.91/drbrownstein/toxic-vaccines-and-autism-a-cdc-coverup/) that the Center for Disease Control—CDC—altered a 2004 study which hid the data that supported Dr. Wakefield’s research. A CDC whistleblower and author on that 2004 paper came forward to announce the 2004 paper was a fraud; the CDC hid data in the paper which showed a clear link between the early administration of the MMR vaccine and autism.

Furthermore, the MMR vaccine is known to cause a shedding (the recipient sheds the virus in bodily fluids) of the measles virus after it is given. (5) Of course, this study (5) would lend credence to Dr. Wakefield’s earlier study.  It is unknown if the latest outbreak of measles was due to a vaccinated patient shedding the virus or a wild-type strain. It would be nice to know the answer to this as the vaccination process may be responsible for starting this epidemic.

I am still waiting for the highest levels of our Government to examine the CDC fraud. We need the U.S. Congress to call an open hearing to address this matter. Until this matter is resolved how can you fault any parent for questioning the safety of the MMR vaccine?

Perhaps Dr. Wakefield’s research was fraudulent (I have studied it and I don’t think it is). Until we know the truth from the CDC, a parent cannot know for sure whether the MMR vaccine is safe to give their child.

One last comment. Both of my much-older-than-I sisters had measles. Back then, it was a benign illness that everybody got. Just like chicken pox. That generation did just fine with measles. They did not suffer the plethora of autoimmune, allergic and chronic illness that the younger generations suffer from. Perhaps we need to do research comparing vaccinated with non-vaccinated populations. Unbelievably, this work still has not been done. There has not been a single randomized, controlled study of a vaccinated versus a non-vaccinated population.

I think the rhetoric should be toned down. No parent wants to harm their child by not vaccinating. We should all respect individual choice. That is what our country was founded on. I would never criticize a parent for vaccinating nor would I be critical of one not vaccinating. It is tough for parents out there, we don’t need to make it worse for them.

As for vaccinating Minnie and Mickey, I say leave it up to Mr. and Mrs. Mouse.

This is a reply from my New Mexico Senator after a petition I signed asking him to speak out in the US Senate against vaccinations went to his office.March 13, 2015. This is how all the politicians think after being bought and paid for by Big Pharma.

    Dear Mr. Miles,

Thank you for contacting me regarding vaccinations. I appreciate knowing your thoughts and concerns on this important issue.

There is broad consensus in the scientific community that vaccines are not linked with autism or other serious medical conditions. In a 2011 report, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) evaluated several vaccines for various diseases – including the mumps, measles, and rubella (MMR) vaccine – and found no link between vaccines and autism. This report follows numerous studies conducted in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that conclude that vaccines do not cause autism. Those reports can be viewed by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/00_pdf/CDCStudiesonVaccinesandAutism.pdf.

In the month of January 2015, 102 people from 14 states were reported to have measles. According to the CDC, the majority of people who got measles were unvaccinated. This prompted health professionals to reiterate the importance of receiving timely immunizations by highlighting the significance of herd immunity – the idea that when the majority of a community is vaccinated, there is little opportunity for an outbreak to occur, making the entire community safer.

There are several proposals before Congress to strengthen immunization requirements for children as a result of this outbreak, including a resolution that recognizes the importance of vaccinations. Representative Adam Schiff (CA-28) introduced H.Res. 117, which affirms that vaccines save lives and are essential to public health. It also recognizes that the lack of vaccinating can cause a public health crisis, and that there is no credible evidence to show that vaccines cause life-threatening or disabling diseases in healthy children or adults. Similar legislation has yet to be introduced in the United States Senate.

However, Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) introduced S. 486, the Head Start on Vaccinations Act, which would require all children who enroll in Head Start and Early Head Start programs nationwide to be fully vaccinated in accordance with the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule.

Head Start programs would assist families in accessing the needed services, and there would be a medical exemption waiver only if a certified health care provider determines a child has an underlying medical condition that would prevent him or her from receiving a vaccination. S. 486 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

As a parent, I understand your concerns regarding decisions that affect the health and well-being of our children. I believe there are many still-active diseases that are preventable with vaccines, which, if utilized, can lower health care costs and improve overall public health. As a United States senator, I stand with the overwhelming scientific data that concludes there is no link between vaccines and autism.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I hope you will continue keeping me informed of the issues important to you.

Yes, Let’s get a scientifically–based debate going on a major news network! Good luck trying to convince the Big-Pharma backed networks to allow both sides to submit research. Maybe it would benefit you to do your own research rather than peruse only government (drug company) “research!”

My youngest daughter was given 2 chicken pox shots before she turned 12. The school told me to get another or she would not be able to come back to school that May. In September of that year she and her older sister were evidently exposed to chicken pox at a restaurant. Her older sister got an extreme external case (had mild case @ 10 yrs. 22 during this case).
The twelve year old had high fevers and was admitted to the hospital three days later. ( Crohn’s disease of 1 year) they ran all sorts of tests even though I told them I thought it was chicken pox. They discharged her on a Friday with one obvious pox on her forehead. She could eat nothing that weekend, due to her mouth being taken over by those pox. ( with exception of that one on her forehead, they were all internal). I took her back to the hospital on Monday, by which time she would have exposed too many more people with the pox. What was icing on the cake for me was her nurse telling my daughter that I was crazy and I shouldn’t do research on the Internet about medical issues.
Second thing. This same daughter had one of the first cases of H1N1 flu the same time the next year. Received tamiflu, which shortened it, and told to get flu shot. Ended up consecutively getting flu 2 more times before it activated her Crohn’s before December of that same year.
Third, we both got a”contaminated” flu shot the year after that which caused a bad reaction at shot site. We made sure all medical people we met knew about that. Only one nurse could tell us what had happened. Long story longer, I’ve had it wth flu shots.
Daughter greatly improved due to liquid diet approach over toxic meds. Her skin was actually luminescent white. She is African American. I am still looking at other answers to her other medical problems.

If the Measles rate had dropped before the actual vaccine was introduced to the public, what was that from? Was it mainly due to Vitamin A treatments? I am the mother of a soon-to-be three year old boy and we have not given him vaccinations. We are supported by his Naturopathic Doctor. People have always given us a hard time about not vaccinating, and now after the Measles issue overblown by the media, people are very angry by the fact we do not vaccinate. Its a very hard thing to deal with at times, but we are sticking to our beliefs! Thanks for your articles!

You write in the article above: “The chicken pox vaccine has clearly lowered the incidence of chicken pox. However, is that a good thing? I am not sure as shingles cases have skyrocketed since the mass vaccination of chicken pox was started.” If you are a doctor, or even a reasonably intelligent lay person, then surely you know that one cannot get shingles unless one has had chicken pox. Therefore, your suggestion that there is a connection between “the mass vaccination of chicken pox” and the fact that “shingles cases have skyrocketed” is shocking! The people getting shingles never had the chicken pox vaccine and DID get chicken pox. The younger people among us, who were fortunate enough to get the chicken pox vaccine, will NOT be able to get shingles. Lucky them. Your comments are misinformed and misleading. Another “boo boo,” “Dr.” Brownstein? I only read your article because someone regrettably posted it on Facebook. I shall not be a future reader and ask your readers to pay close attention to your “boo boos” because I suspect there are many.

      Anne,
No boo-boo. The chicken pox vaccine is related to the increasing incidence of shingles. It was shown in the initial studies of the chickenpox vaccine. That is the reason younger and younger people are coming down with shingles. We need the chicken pox virus to circulate to continually stimulate our immune systems. And, yes, kids can get shingles after the chicken pox vaccine.
      Boo Boo to you.

I agree with you. It would be good to have a debate. This is done far too seldom nowadays. The debate is a good format for the truth to come out, and sometimes both sides have very good points. I’m mostly on the anti-vax side, but really I just want the truth. The debate would be a very wide-ranging and fascinating one, including effects of toxins on individuals, the nature and functioning of the immune system, etc.

I just had a first hand experience last week with a 5 year old client from MI. He was diagnosed with shingles. He never had chicken pox. We cannot acquire shingles from another person. The only way someone can have shingles is if a person had chicken pox in the past. However, he had the chicken pox vaccine. So, he got shingles from chicken pox vaccines. The interesting thing that I didn’t know is that if you have shingles you are contagious (not of shingles) but of chicken pox. So, let’s say that he starts an outbreak of chicken pox here in MI, the media will say that the culprit was a non-vaccinated kid!

Past it on to my two boys one who.is 19 and has chronic asthma and allergies! When he was 17 suffered blood clot! My 7 yr old suffers from a severe peanut allergy not to mention dozens more environmental and food allergies. I feel my kids and i hv a diff gene make up that our immune systems can handle vaccines! Dear Mark Robertson, I too would love to hear that debate between the pro-vaccine “experts” and the respected doctors like Dr Brownstein. So why won’t the major media outlets do just that? Interesting how they shut out any such debate, n’est pas?

I think this blog is exactly what America needs, but those in power (media, pharma, money) can’t allow that! And they clearly suppress such information from public distribution. Fear begets panic, vitriol, hatred, irrational behavior and ultimately leads to tyranny. We’ve seen how that goes down. Is that the America you want to live in? One that jails parents for not vaccinating their children, as some in the media have cried out for irrationally? Revoking the licenses of doctors who don’t comply with pharma and actually uphold their hypocritical oath to treat anyone, vaccinated or not? Is that land of the free and home of the brave?

    Who have we become?

For me it comes down to this- no matter how healthy my family’s lifestyle is, when I have an infant (who is too young to be vaccinated) I am cashing in on herd immunity. I am literally benefitting from other people taking a shared risk by getting vaccinated. Therefore, when my child is old enough to be vaccinated I believe it is right to pay back into this invisible immunity jar by having them immunized and therefore allowing them to protect other infants too young to be vaccinated. I understand there is a small risk involved but I believe it is my duty to participate in this shared immunity that my child benefitted from when they were most vulnerable to protect others in their most vulnerable time. If too many people opt out, no one is protected.

GREAT VIDEO…”How Vaccines Harm Child Brain Development” – Dr Russell Blaylock MD
“36 vaccinations by age two” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QBcMYqlaDs

Russell L. Blaylock, M.D., has worn many expert “hats” over the past four decades.

After attending medical school, he completed a general surgical internship and neurosurgical residency. And for over 25 years, Dr. Blaylock worked as a highly regarded neurosurgeon, practicing in major hospitals in the Carolinas.

He co-invented an intricate neurosurgical procedure that’s still in use today, and has taught surgical procedures to medical school students.

However, his medical practice took a dramatic turn after both his parents contracted Parkinson’s disease, and later died when conventional medicine failed them.

I think this blog is dangerous. I’m a physician, and must admit that Dr. Brownstein’s arguments “sounded” good to me when I first read them a few weeks ago. As this topic has gained greater coverage in the media, many articles have been written and accessing information about vaccines has become as easy as opening my e-mail. I just listened to an interview of Walter Orenstein, MD on the Medpage Today site and read a few of the articles on vaccines there. The authors and speakers are highly credentialed and qualified physicians with tremendous knowledge and background in infectious disease, pediatrics, and the science and policy of immunizations. Virtually everything these experts report contradicts the “facts” and information that Dr. Brownstein reports. I would love to see a debate between Dr. Brownstein and any of these physicians. Or for that matter, lets allow the anti-vaccination campsto bring forward their top experts to debate the medical establishments experts so that those members of the public who wonder about the truth can hear the arguments side by side. There may well be some valuable information provided on this blog, but when it is interspersed with misinformation and junk science, the credibility of the entire site is suspect. Shame on you Dr. Brownstein for circulating information that confuses patients and, in the process, influences them to make decisions that are not in their best interest or the best interest of the public health.

I don’t agree, Kristen. Yes, if you don’t vaccinate and you take no other steps to secure the health of your child, then I agree with you. But almost all anti-vax parents take other active measures to strengthen their children’s immune systems. Since we have started to eat very healthy on Weston A. Price Foundation principles and take supplements like cod liver oil, not only have our kids (and us) not gotten measles, mumps, polio, etc., we haven’t gotten sick at all in 3 years or so. Vaccination is a shortcut which trades a good chance for chronic problems for some protection against severe (and not so severe) diseases – vaccination does NOT strengthen a person’s immune system.

  • Author Icon
    Kristen

I’m a libertarian and I will vaccinate my children. I believe that all people have a right to live happily and healthily not just a privileged few. Most of the people who don’t vaccinate their children are educated, affluent and white. It seems they are so concerned with winning the competitive parent race that they would rather endanger other less privileged children’s lives than allow the possibility of their child developing allergies or autism thereby sapping their children’s potential for perfection. My husband has several life threatening allergies. I would gladly raise a child with his allergies than be responsible for having my child be the carrier of an infectious disease and spreading it to a less fortunate child who’s immune system was compromised due to an autoimmune disease and have the disease we spread cause their death.

By not vaccinating, a person is opting out of a shared risk while still benefitting from everyone else’s immunity who willingly participated in said risk. Refusing vaccination isn’t anti-government. It’s anti-social. That said, I believe each parent should make their own choice: if you don’t want to vaccinate your kids, please realize that it is an act of elitism and isolationism. That’s fine, as long as you are isolationists in all other aspects of your life. In other words please homeschool and avoid public places. You never know who’s life you might be endangering.

I’m from the UK and am wondering if the vaccines here contain all those nasties you mention such as Mercury, Aluminium and Formaldehyde? Only websites offering information on the ingredients of these vaccines are difficult to find except one website that stated that no children’s vaccinations here contain Mercury except the flu shot which I have refused during my pregnancy . I’ve managed to by pass the Whooping Cough during pregnancy jab too but my baby is due in a a few weeks and I will be expected to immunise in a few months time and I still cannot make a decision as the information isn’t there about ingredients and risks or alternatives? Thank you! I am blown away by FEAR that local parents and the media here in Metro Detroit are portraying about the Measles vaccine. Sometimes I wonder if we are truly living in a free country anymore with the amount of vaccines being forced on our children. Yes, this is a very emotional issue but like you say, we should all respect other parents CHOICE to raise their children in whatever way they choose. There have never been any independent, third party, double-blind placebo controlled studies showing vaccines provide greater benefit than natural immunity. I truly appreciate you speaking out on this – glad to hear a voice of reason finally!

It our developed country we as a whole shoul be getting all the nutrients and vitimin we need without supplementation. That said if a vaccine can save one life I say get the vaccine. I have seen babies and children die from whooping cough and flus they were heathy in every way and than they were gone .
Than the parent is left wondering what did we do wrong we chose not vaccine because we were told it would cause more harm and than the disease took my child instead. Ask some who is living with the after effects of polio if they would of taken a vaccine

      Pat,
You bring up a good argument to vaccinate. The counter argument can be made by others that my child was healthy until he/she was vaccinated and then he/she developed regressive autism, or worse, died. There are two sides to that story.
I too have seen the pain a parent suffers with from the death of child from whooping cough. Also, I have seen the pain a parent suffers from a vaccinated child who totally changed in behavior after the vaccine and developed regressive autism.
Both scenarios, for lack of a better word, suck.

Thank you for this article. One (of the many) pet peeves I have regarding the reporting of these incidences (measles, mumps, whooping cough, flu, etc.) is the use of the word “epidemic”. 100 cases in a population of 350 million+ is by no means an epidemic. Of course, any death is tragic but to be constantly pounded on by the media this notion that we all should do as the so-called experts recommend because of the looming “epidemic” is yet another instance of the ignorace surrounding this subject. Scare tactics and over saturation of the message via TV, internet, magazines, etc. … disgusting, and further proof in my opinion of the lies (due to conflict of interests, hidden agends, greed and so on) they will constantly perpetuate.

Dr. B makes truthful and honest statements regarding vaccines that are above reproach.

There is a lot of disinformation from the CDC and other health agencies that are all profit driven and incorporated as corporations.

People, we need to wake up! Who injected Afican Americans with syphilis in the United Staes? Who injected the American public with radioactive isotopes? And these same corporations are telling you to vaccinate.

Vaccines are engineered to sicken and to depopulate humanity. These are stealth plans in plain view.
Bill Gates states (Innovating Zero presentation) that if we do a good enough job at vaccinating, we can lower the world populations. http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates

When I was a kid back in the 40s and 50s, my mother took me to every “pox party” she could find. As a result, I had every childhood disease in childhood. Now I seldom get sick with anything. (The last time I was really sick was the Asian flu in the 60s.) Maybe a cold every 4 or 5 years, despite constant exposure to all sorts of infectuous stuff, both ordinary and exotic–plague and hanta virus (hanta doesn’t transmit human to human). I’m a paramedic on a 911 ambulance working in a remote part of the American West. The only vaccines available when I was a child were smallpox, tetanus, and typhoid fever. When working on the ambulance, however, my company insisted I get a flu shot every year and within 72-hours, I had the flu–always. About 20-years ago, I stopped the flu shots and haven’t had the flu since. I assume my immune system is well tuned up. I wish my mother was still here so I could thank her for what she unknowingly did..

    Great blog post, Dr. Browmstein!!!

Here’s something I sent to my family and email list:

Lots of the typical scare tactics and Pharma propaganda in the media as to measles, with talk of mandatory forced vaccinations…

“Digging beneath the thin fairytale of the measles vaccine, it is possible to unearth a large number of facts that question the entire premise of continuously vaccinating the entire human population from cradle to grave…”

You’ll never hear about this research article on the news!!!

A very interesting article…especially the graphs showing how the measles death rate per 100,000 had already drastically dropped, well before the introduction of the vaccine in the early 60’s.

It gets into side effects and also covers the effects of vitamins.

Read the full article and DON’T MISS Dr.Robert Rowen’s measles article on his Facebook site at the bottom link.

I was vaccinated for measles when I was a child in the 60’s, when I was sixteen however I still I developed the disease and was very poorly. I never understood how I could develope the illness when I had been vaccinated until recently. I developed multiple intolerances, allergies and imbalances in my body. Amongst other findings I recently found out I have a DNA mutation which means I do not methylate drugs properly and explains why medications have such a negative effect on me.I know this does not apply to everyone, however I do feel it does apply to a certain percentage of people with this particular mutation.
There is still so much to understand and I feel one has to be extremely careful that lessons are learnt not to blindly label us all the same without understanding the knock on effects.
Knowing what I know do, do I not have the right and responsibility to myself to say no to further vaccinations and medications?
After all I did what I was told and still developed measels!!!

The claim that MMR vaccine contains aborted fetal tissue is factually incorrect. Human cells are used to culture the virus that makes the vaccine. They were obtained from a legal therapeutic abortion – in 1962. Those cells have been cultured ever since, and have doubtless saved many lives and much suffering. This is similar to using donor organs to save lives.

The cells themselves do not occur in the vaccine.

And no less an authority than the Vatican has specifically said that it is moral to make the vaccine in this way, even considering their longstanding objection to abortion.

The peanut allergy epidemic in children was precipitated by childhood injections. Food anaphylaxis requires an initial sensitization involving injection of some sort, followed by a later ingestion of the sensitized food. Get the shot, then later eat the food. Dr Charles Richet, who coined the term anaphylaxis found that the reaction came on as the result of intact proteins in the food having bypassed the digestive system and making their way intact into the blood.
Peanut oils were introduced as vaccine excipients in the mid 1960s. By 1980 they had become the preferred excipient. Even the most refined peanut oils still contain some traces of intact peanut proteins. The first study of peanut allergies was not undertaken until 1973. It was a study of peanut excipients in vaccines. Soon afterwards, and as a result of that study, manufacturers were no longer required to disclose all the ingredients in vaccines. Although peanut allergies became fairly common during the 1980s, it wasn’t until the early 1990s when the true epidemic appeared. The Mandated Schedule of vaccines for children doubled from the 80s to the 90s and there was a sudden surge of children reacting to peanuts.

Oh dear. “Mercury. Formaldehyde. MMR scare.”

Folks, we have the fear that the anti-vax community trades in. This is sad to see from a doctor who has performed some very useful investigations into iodine and thyroid.

The measles incidence in the US was at zero. Now it is edging back up. And does anyone here not know about how the anti-vax people have given us a return of whooping cough? Some babies have died.

I have to be realistic. I know that there is only a small chance I will convince anyone here. I get that. The reason I’m posting here is to be counted – most of Dr. Brownstein’s respondents so far have been anti-vax.

    Thank you.

      Mark,
Measles epidemics recur regardless of how many are vaccinated. We have had measles outbreaks every few years here. One province in China, where there is forced vaccinations, has a 99% vaccine rate. They still have measles outbreaks. Do I think the chicken pox, whooping cough and the measles vaccine work? Yes. They decrease the incidences of all three illnesses, at least for certain a time period. What is going to happen when the virus mutates? What is going to happen when immunity wears off? The whooping cough epidemic we are now experiencing is due in part to the virus mutating and the failure of the vaccine to provide life-long immunity. Shingles is on the rise because of the chicken pox vaccine. Are we healthier for all these vaccines? No. We have more allergies and asthma as well as autoimmune and other chronic illnesses than we know what to do with. And, I did not even mention the autism epidemic.
      DrB
It should be criminal to inject toxins into anyone’s body.
I don’t think we need more vaccines. We need to go back to the basics and support the body’s biochemistry and immune system.

So glad you wrote on this topic! I have been waiting anxiously to hear your take on the measles hysteria. Just when I start thinking I am being paranoid about vaccines you write something poignant and empowering that assures me I am doing the right thing with my children! Thank you for your sensible and outstanding research and information.

  • Author Icon

Dr. Brownstein, Thank you sir for adding an intelligent and thoughtful response to all the media hysteria and hype. As you clearly stated, we don’t know if this outbreak is from shedding of a vaccinated child or the wild form. In either case, this latest measles outbreak, is much ado about nothing. However, so many people have been brainwashed by big pharma, through no fault of their own, and simply refuse to look at the real reasons disease rates for these viruses have plummeted. I’m glad too, that you posted the graph that you did, there are many similar graphs for others such as polio, smallpox etc. I hope that someday rational voices will pierce the cacophony of rhetoric so that more truth can be exposed about vaccination and government policy about them. As a D.C., my credentials mean nothing in this debate, and have no weight per se, your voice however, does confer authority on the subject. So bravo to you kind sir for lifting your voice so that parents making an informed choice without fear of persecution can become a reality. Increases in autoimmunity, allergies, sensitivities, cancer etc that we see today have there footing in not only a more toxic environment in general, i.e. geo engineering, glyphosate, GMO foods, crossbreeding grains, but also the crazy vaccination schedule for a child to have 25 innoculations in just the first 15 months! This according to the cdc schedule. I’m sure you are aware of this book, but in the off chance that you aren’t Suzanne Humpries MD, a nephrologist has written a terrific book on this subject called “Dissolving Illusions”.

    All the best!

When my son was preparing to go to college , we learned he had to have a meningitis vaccine to live in the dorm. Within a few weeks he found he was allergic to oranges, then broccoli ( with full blown anaphylactic episode) subsequently found he is allergic to ALL vegetables, fruits and nuts. He is now 30 and had 2 episodes last year . Epi -pen and ER visits. There is no one that could ever convince me that his allergies didn’t come from that vaccine . I have 3 grandchildren with one on the way and the first three have had delayed shots and seem to be fine but who knows . When I was a child my sister , my brother and I had mumps and measles at the same time . My mama went crazy but we were fine.

Your graph showing the MORTALITY rate of measles is very misleading when you following it by verbally stating “The Powers-That-Be claim that vaccines markedly lowered the rate of common childhood illnesses such as measles and whooping cough. However, you can see from the graph above that the incidence of these illnesses were rapidly falling before the mass vaccination campaign began.”

The graph and your follow up statements do not match. Just because modern medicine was getting better at the same time as vaccines were being developed means that less children were dying from the disease and not less children actually getting the disease.

      Katie,
You are correct. I made a boo-boo. But, my boo boo does not change anything. Vaccinators claim that vaccines have lowered the mortality rate from childhood diseases. That is the main reason we are vaccinating. I corrected my boo boo to read mortality rate. My boo boo does not change the message in the least.

I was in the test group in Atlanta back in the sixties for the MMR shot. I’ve always had a hard time with resisting diseases-tonsillitis 3 times a year all of my school years seems a little much to me! My youngest daughter who was never vaccinated got 3 day measles after being repeatedly playing with an 18 month old who had been vaccinated with the MMR. I think we all know what happened at Disneyland but no one in the government will ever admit it! Thanks for the great work! Keep it up!

Agree with others that this was a thoughtful commentary on a contentious subject. The local health department reported the first case in our county in several years last week. Both the DOH and media have caused otherwise level-headed parents to freak out.

Julie Gerberding MD, who ran the CDC for many years, was on the adjacent cadaver in med school. When she left the CDC, Merck appointed her to run its vaccine division. Such blatant conflict of interest makes it tougher than ever to sort out the truth.

Am I missing something?? Seems to me if you have been vaccinated why would you worry about anyone with the measles? You’re safe, right? If one truly believes in the MMR vaccine why worry if someone else has it? Seems pretty irrational to me. Wouldn’t those who have not been vaccinated just be getting a free ride (or maybe the measles) right?

When I was 8 (I’m 58) my little friend died after contracting the measles. His mother was giving him aspirin for the fever because at the time no one knew of Reyes syndrome which causes acute onset of an encephalopathy. His cause of death as listed as encephalitis. This leads one to wonder how many deaths from the measles before the 1980’s could actually be linked to the use of aspirin in children.

Thank you for your calm, courageous, and rational comments amid the dogmatic hysteria. As a mother of a son who had a profoundly adverse and lasting reaction to the MMR vaccine when he was a toddler (now 26 YO), I thank you and urge you to keep speaking up for a wiser approach.

The amount of hysteria generated over the recent measles outbreak is alarming. The media is treating this disease like it was ebola! As a naturopath and homeopath, I’m in total agreement with what Dr. B has written regarding suppressing the immune system and resultant metabolic and functional disease states. I encourage my patients to become educated about vaccines and insist on altering the vaccine schedule to suit their child’s needs.

  • Author Icon

Thank you! You’d think from the Los Angeles Times and radio and TV broadcasts that WWIII’s about to begin. MEASLES! Yes, a rash that might bring a therapeutic fever for 2 or 3 days. Wish the media would publish the childhood illness incidence graphs since 1900 or so, showing all common childhood illnesses were no longer “epidemic” before the development of vaccines. In the 70s and 80s as a Waldorf school kindergarten teacher, I found it remarkable that the children who were vaccinated got scarlet fever, strep throat, and anything their bodies could find to give them a fever and cleansing illness. Big Pharma is out of control!

Another reason for the increase in allergies and other chronic disease can also be linked to GMOs and glyphosate. It is destroying our gut bacteria and causing leaky gut. the wrong stuff is getting into our blood stream and our immune system is attacking it, as it should. But with the immune system constantly working it gets depleted and that is one of the reasons for so many chronic illnesses today. One of the best ways to combat it is to go all organic. And as far as the vaccines go? It’s definitely a hot topic, but I am 57 years old. I remember get the measles. I remember trying to convince my other that I had a lot of mosquito bites so I could still go out and play. People today are so fearful of every disease thanks to the scare tactics used on us by the pharmaceutical industry and our government, both of who stand to profit from our fear.

I received a tetanus shot and shortly after was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune thyroid disease. I am trying to clean my gut up but don’t know if I can reverse this as I probably have mercury toxicity (or whatever is in the tetanus shot that poisoned by body). I will never get another vaccination again.
