Nutritional Police Lose Round 1

Round 1 goes to us.

I wrote to you on October 11, 2013 about the idiotic nutrition law that was signed into Michigan law a few years ago.  Responsible citizens who don’t want a nutritional police state spoke in front of a Michigan House Committee on October 29, 2013 in Lansing, Michigan.  I was one of those citizens.   I stated that we do not need one group—registered dieticians–to control who can and who cannot talk about nutrition.  Thankfully, the committee voted to pass HB 4688–which would repeal the law– by a vote of nine to one with five abstentions.

The next step is for this bill to go to the House floor for a vote—it may happen this week.  We are not out of the woods yet.  The nutritional police (i.e., the registered dieticians) were at that house meeting wearing their police uniforms–white lab coats.  We need to keep up the momentum.  I am urging all of you Michigan residents to contact your representative and let them know that you want HB 4688 passed (which would repeal the nutrition law).    We can make a difference IF our voices are heard.  I encourage you all to contact your representatives and tell them vote yes on HB 4688.

You can keep up-to-date about what is happening by going here:  nutritionadvocacy.orgThe Center for Nutrition Advocacy was founded to   alert you to legislation and policy affecting nutrition providers of all kinds.

Remember, if we work together we don’t have to put up with a nonsensical law about who can and cannot speak about nutrition.   I will keep you updated on this issue.

Wow, way to go, like we really need more government oversight on our personal lives, funny they think they know better that everyone else. keep up the message, sounds like some are listening.

As a Holistic Nutritionist in Canada I support your efforts. We don’t have legislation prohibiting anyone but Dieticians from speaking about nutrition but I know they (RDs) are trying to expand their scope of practice. we must get out from under the various governmental health pyramids and industry backed food guides and concentrate on what the individual needs.
    Keep up the great work.

I am not a US citizen, so I cannot join your actions, but I am certainly a supporter and wish you all the best of success in your efforts to put a stop to this tyranny of nutritionists who most of the time do not know the first thing about right nutrition

I agree with NDs but I also think that holistic nutritionists should be able to speak about nutrition as well. They have nothing to do with RDs.

I do not live in Michigan but would have LOVED to have been a fly on the wall when you gave that speech!

If they are going to have nutrition police they should be Naturopathic physicians. Naturopathic Physicians are the only people qualified enough to speak about nutrition. A registered dietition speaking is a joke. Have you seen what they serve in hospitals, nursing homes, schools etc… and they call that nutrition. Please, so not make me laugh – I just might fall over and hit my head.
