Iodine Deficiency 2019: The Disaster Continues

In medical school, I was taught that iodine deficiency was a thing of the past. It took me a short time into my holistic practice of medicine to realize that what I was taught about iodine was incorrect. In fact, I have been writing about iodine and its importance to health for nearly 15 years. When I started researching iodine in the late 1990s, I was shocked to discover that iodine deficiency was still occurring across the United States. When I began testing my patient’s iodine levels I found the vast majority—over 97%–were iodine deficient and most were severely iodine deficient.

At that time, I asked myself, “How and why could this be happening?” As I researched more and more about iodine the answers became clear. Iodine deficiency was still present because our food supply was (and still is) woefully inadequate in iodine. Declining mineral levels in our soil coupled with more pollution in the oceans made a perfect storm for iodine deficiency. However, the iodine deficiency epidemic was increasing because of our increasing exposures to toxic halides fluoride and bromide.  These toxic elements competitively inhibit iodine in the body. Our water supply has been contaminated with fluoride and our food supply has been adulterated with bromine in the form of brominated flour and vegetable oils.  Bromide is also found in many commonly used consumer items as a fire retardant.

Researchers from Texas Women’s University just released a 2019 article titled, “A Review of Iodine Status of Women of Reproductive Age in the USA.” (1) The authors summarized the studies that assessed iodine status of women of reproductive age in the USA. The authors state, “Despite the USA being considered iodine sufficient for the general population, the US dietary iodine intakes have decreased drastically since the 1970s, with iodine deficiency reemerging in vulnerable groups such as women of reproductive age. …a majority of the articles reviewed demonstrate emergent iodine deficiency in this population of women of reproductive age, indicating alarm for a public health concern needing immediate attention.”

Iodine is an essential element that we cannot live without. Every cell in the body needs and requires iodine to function optimally. The most vulnerable population for iodine deficiency are women of child-bearing age. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can cause permanently lowered IQ in children along with a host of neurologic and endocrine problems including mental retardation, autism, ADHD and thyroid problems. In adults, iodine deficiency can be linked to the epidemic rise in cancers of the glandular tissues—including the thyroid, ovary, uterus, prostate, breast and pancreas.

Folks, I have been sounding the iodine-deficiency alarm for nearly two decades. I have written numerous articles and books about the epidemic of iodine deficiency. I encourage you to educate yourself about iodine deficiency as waiting for public health officials to act is like waiting for Godot.

In our toxic world, our iodine requirements have gone up compared to our predecessors. With our tainted food supply, it is extremely difficult to ingest enough iodine through the diet. Therefore, I  recommend iodine supplementation to nearly every patient.   Most of my patients take from 25 and 50 mg/day. My book, Iodine: Why You Need It Why You Can’t Live Without It will provide you with the information you need to make the proper choices about iodine supplementation.  And, keep in mind, for women of pregnancy age, iodine supplementation should be started before pregnancy.

To All Our Health,

DrB

Is there a link between polymyalgia rheumatica and either iodine deficiency and/or thyroid disorders? Thank you.

Hello Dr. Brownstein, as always I thank you for all that you do. There are few doctors who understand the importance of iodine as you do.
My question is: when adding the ATP cofactors, can you take at a different time to taking the iodine? Thank you again.

Hello Dr Brownstein or moderator. In case Dr Brownstein is not aware, my questions over the last few days are only being deleted or disappearing and not posted or answered. What is wrong with my questions? In case this one is posted ( i doubt it) im wondering what might cause tsh to go from 1.8 to .98 in 3-4 months after starting taking iodine? Hoping the powers that be wont ignore or delete this one also.

    • Author Icon

      Brad,
I cannot answer every question that comes through–please understand.
The TSH declined because the thyroid is functioning better with the addition of iodine.

Dr Brownstein, thank you for answering this question. My sister has a thyroid nodule thats been growing slowly over the past 6 years and has become noticeable just recently. Since then she started taking iodine and it seems that in 6 months her nodule is the same size. Any guess based on your experience how long until her nodule might bcome noticeably smaller? Iodine should help with this yes?

    • Author Icon

      Matty,
Young people respond better than older patients–no surprises there. It usually takes 6 months or so for nodules to become smaller. however, large nodules may not recede and the best iodine can do is stop further growth.

Hi Dr. Brownstein, it’s clear that Vitamin C added to Lugol’s converts the Iodine to Iodide. See this image capture https://www.screencast.com/t/mGNcsmdd
I’m trying to reconcile your comment that this is not a problem with your other comments that taking Iodide without Iodine has not given you the same clinical results (Iodine book 5th edition p.63). Your thoughts?

    • Author Icon

      Brian,
You can convert iodine to iodide if there is enough vitamin C. Sorry I did not make that clear. For most, taking it together is not a problem.
      DrB

      • Author Icon
        Brian Haviland

The test shown in the image capture only required 200mg of Vitamin C. Given that the protocol specifies 2000 to 5000mg I don’t understand how there is not a potential problem especially if the Lugol’s is put into orange juice etc.

When I’ve raised this point some have said that the body can convert Iodide to Iodine as needed. My impression from your book is that this is not true?

        • Author Icon

          Brian,
I agree. We don’t want to reduce iodine to iodide outside the body. The body can convert, but iodine is best used as a combination of the two forms.
          DrB
As for OJ, I have not done that. Does OJ reduce iodine? If iodine is put into enough powdered C, it will reduce it.
          DrB

          • Author Icon

8 oz. of fresh OJ contains about 124 mg of Vitamin C. Processed juices may have less although sometimes they have added Ascorbic Acid. While it would be harder to see the visual reaction shown in my photo posted previously using Ascorbic Acid and water I don’t see any reason why the reaction described below would not take place.

Reference: “The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is a learned society
(professional association) in the United Kingdom with the goal of ‘advancing the chemical sciences.’ It was formed in 1980 from the merger of the Chemical Society, the Royal Institute of Chemistry, the Faraday Society and the Society for Analytical Chemistry with a new Royal Charter and the dual role of learned society and professional body.”
“One molecule of ascorbic acid converts one molecule of iodine into two iodide ions.”
            http://www.rsc.org/images/TM0413-Vitamin-C_tcm18-232764.pdf

Consider that there are frequent enthusiastic reports of how putting Lugol’s into OJ is a way to make it taste better. I suspect that this is in part because the more caustic Iodine has been converted to the more palatable Iodide.

If the body is able to convert Iodide into Iodine as needed then this is not a problem, but I have not seen convincing evidence of that and your reported clinical experience seems to say we need both forms.

Patients with certain issues that require Iodide (e.g. thyroid problems) might do as well or even better via upping their Iodide intake by taking Lugol’s with juice.

          • Author Icon

            Brain,
Even those with thyroid problems do better with iodine/iodide combinations than iodide alone. That has been my clinical experience for over 25 years.

Hi Dr Brownstein, you mention in your book that you personally take 75mg of iodine a day and recommend most people will be fine on a dose between 6.25mg and 50mg. I’m interested how you decided that 75mg was better for you than 50mg, did you feel significantly different at a higher dose, and any tips on how to “know” when you are at the right dose other than blood or loading tests, thank you.

    • Author Icon

      Susie,
I don’t have a great answer for you. I felt better when I took over 25 mg but cannot tell beyond that. 50 mg/day saturates most of the iodine receptors throughout the body.

My question today is in regard to sea salt cleanse: for years I have been taking Himalayan pink sea salt 1/2 tsp. with two full glasses of water in the morning. It is okay to take vitamin C at the same time as Lugol’s iodine? I know that mixing it with the powdered form of vitamin C is perhaps not a good thing, but I am referring to Lipsomal forms or tablets/capsules forms of vitamin C. Thank you.

    Dear Dr. Brownstein,

My husband cannot tolerate more than 100mg of selenium, else he gets strong headaches. He needs 3 drops of lugol 2% to be ok, not cold and not tired. I understand that both the selenium and iodine dosages are less than your typical recommendations.

Would his intolerance to a higher selenium dose make it such that iodine supplementation is unsafe in his case, MUST it be 200mcg? or do the low dosages of both iodine and selenium make it ok? His hashi antibodies are low.

    • Author Icon

      Aaron,
Not everyone is deficient in selenium. I do not have the majority of my patients on it and they do just fine with iodine. Also, selenium can be toxic and the dose needs to be monitored.

Hello! I recently found you after searching podcasts for pregnancy and the thyroid connection. I do not have a thyroid and am on NatureThroid. A lot of the information is geared towards those who still have thyroids. What recommendations/experience can you share regarding those of us who don’t have a thyroid and are trying to get pregnant? I recently have had 3 miscarriages and the doctors cannot find anything to attribute them to between my husband and myself, however no one has checked my iodine levels! I just ordered your Iodine book and capsules and will start those ASAP. So happy I found you! Thank you!!

You mention goitrogens in your Iodine book and how they can affect thyroid function. I have issues with Estrogen Dominance, which can also negatively affect your thyroid, so I take 2 supplements for Estrogen Dominance that are derived from Cruciferous Vegetables, DIM (diindolylmethane) and SGS (sulforaphane glucosinolate). Do you happen to know if DIM & SGS are goitrogenic? I have read conflicting reports, some say the goitrogens are removed and only DIM/SGS remain, but after a few weeks on either one of these supplements, it seems my thyroid symptoms worsen. Would love our input. Thank you so much.

I am considered subclinical hypothyroid, every time I try Iodine I get an achy type pain around my thyroid gland. What would cause this, and is it safe to continue with iodine? Even half of a 12.5mg Iodoral will cause this pain. The pain goes away when I stop the iodine. Thank you.

    • Author Icon

      Angie,
It could be a detox reaction from bromine as I have seen this. When I see this in my patients (without kidney disease), I instruct them to take 1-3 tsp of unrefined salt/day for two weeks, then try the iodine again. That usually works. It is best to work with and get a advice from a knowledgeable health care provider before doing that.

I would like to know if iodine can treat leaky gut, SIBO and IBS since hashimoto’s thyroidits and grave’s disease are autoimmune disease.

Most of the autoimmune disease come from gut problem and Iodine is a nutrient that can cure hashimoto’s. Is that mean iodine can treat gut problem through this mechanism?

    Hello Dr. B
Thanks for your blog. I’m a homeopath student and have a good grip on testing myself for all kinds of medicine. I’ve severe thyroid problems (according to the thyroid specialist in hospital), and my daily test shows me I need about 300 mg Iodine pr day! I feel so good taking this vast amount, no problems at all, and the homeopath teaching me is so amazed of how good the iodine is helping me. I had ovarie cysts, and within 3 months they were half in size. My gynaecologist was so surprised, he had never seen that before! (It’s 3 months since I got my ovaries scanned, my gynaecologist will not check me before 2020!) Since I started (5 months ago) I’ve not have one day ill with the flu! I do feel so great all over.
But my question is: is it normal with this amount of iodine pr day?
    Kindest regards Karin

I’m back with an urgent q.

Been taking iodoral to good effect. It has helped me heal a bad case of cherry angiomas like the ones shown here https://amanonmedicine.com/cherry-angiomas-bromine-iodine/

Problem is now ultrasound shows a 3 cm mass on my right kidney. Getting CAT Monday using ironically iodine contrast to ascertain.

But that surfaces a unique question. If kidney disease is possible and indicated, what is the course of action for iodine supplementation.

Can biopsies cause cancerous thyroid nodules to grow or become swollen?
Also i was diagnosed with cancerous nodules by biopsy several weeks ago. I previously had an ultasound in 2015.. There has been a lack of clinical change in the thyroid since ultasound in 2015….nodules much the same in size. I came across your book about iodine in 2015 and started taking a couple drops a day. Since the biopsy, a few weeks ago, i have increased iodine to 50 mg. The surgeon i was referred to was ready to remove my thyroid.. Hello Dr Brownstein, I have been following the iodine protocol for just over 2 years. I have had to cut the intake down to 2 drops a week but even at this I get continual throbbing in the neck just below the ears and mild palpitations almost continually. I am at a loss with this, as even if I take long breaks e.g. 8 weeks the symptoms reduce but do not go away. I have tried just about everything, would you have any suggestions? I live in the UK so it is impossible to find anyone with your expertise, thanks.

I’ve read a lot of research (including your publications) on the positive effects of iodine on breast health. Even though my thyroid tests (T4, TSH) are “normal”, I’ve decided to try Lugol for my breast issues (extreme density/hyperplasia/papillomas/cycsts). However, I came across this publication on how iodine may induce breast cancer cell growth: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5787473/
What are your thoughts? Should I be concerned with the iodine regimen? Thank you for all you do!

    • Author Icon

      Jenny,
Iodine has a long history of treating fibrocystic breast disease, which is a precursor to breast cancer. There are other in-vitro studies that show iodine causing the death of many different types of cancer cells, including breast cancer. The study you noted was done in-vitro on a breast cancer cell line. How that translates into human research is anyone’s guess.
I would assume I would be seeing a plethora of breast cancer cases if iodine was causing it. I am not.
Also, iodine levels have fallen over 50% during the last 40 years according to NHANES data. If iodine were causing breast cancer we should be seeing declining rates. We are not. That, in effect, rules out iodine has a causative factor for breast cancer.
Hopefully, I am answering your question here…

    Dr.Brownstein,

    Sorry to interrupt you again.

I had my first hyperthyroid condition (My TSH was in negative value below zero) and my doctor advised me to stop eating seafood and gave me a medicine called “Carbimazole” to lower my thyroid hormones level. So, I stopped eating seafood and iodinzed salt from 2008 to 2013.

In 2014, I ate small amount of seaweed and I had my second hyperthyroid condition(my TSH was still negative below zero ). My doctor advised me to stop eating seafood again and gave me carbimazole again. So, I stopped eating any seafood and iodinzed salt again from 2014 to 2017.

Now, my TSH is back to lab normal reference range between 1 to 2. However, I have anti-TPO and Anti-TG which are thyroid antibodies. From the above period(2008 to 2013 and 2014 to 2017), I stopped eating seafood and iodized salt, how can I still have normal thyroid hormones level without eating iodine content food? Where did my iodine come from? I really doubt that it is the main reason causing my Anti-TPO and Anti-TG present.

    Thank you for your answering.

      Hudson,
You may have an autonomous functioning thyroid nodule. That is a nodule that is very sensitive to iodine and can make too much thyroid hormone with minimal iodine exposure. If that is the case, that is treated by surgery to remove it. Your doctor could check for that. I wrote about that in my iodine book.

I am an athletic 27 yr old female (142 lbs) who has some issues with large cysts on Ovaries, fibrocystic breasts, and other hormonal issues. I eat a plant based diet and supplement with a Whole Food Multi Vitamin, Vitamin D3, B12, Omega 3, and I use a Maca root powder. I have not taken the Iodine test because I know I an deficient with all the hormonal issues I have been experiencing. Dr. B:

I have Hashimoto’s and began supplementing with iodine about two years ago. Per previous 24 hour urine tests, the iodine doses I took during that time (12.5 mg) were not effective, as I was not excreting very much iodine in the tests, and my TPO antibodies remained high (>900).

Over the past few months, I increased my dose to 50 mg a day. Although I have not done another loading test since the increase in dosage, I have had blood work done, and my TPO antibodies have essentially dropped in half (from >900 to +\-500). Do you have patients taking more than 50 mg of iodine a day, and if so, do you have any concerns for such higher dosages? Could my problem be a transport issue, and not so much a dosage issue? I take a variety of additional supplements along with the iodine. The only thing I’m lacking is sea salt.

I recently purchased your iodine book and have read most of it, but did not see any mention of specific dosages, other than the 12.5-50 mg range. I know you can’t give medical advice here; unfortunately, there are no iodine literate doctors in the state where I live. I am currently being seen by a holistic/thyroid doctor in another state, and while he is familiar with your work, in addition to Dr.’s Abraham, Flechas and Charles Hakala, he does not believe higher iodine dosages are safe for someone with Hashimoto’s, so I am essentially going it alone.

I have many patients on doses above the 12-50 range. Those who need more I are generally those with glandular disease.

I received my 24 hours iodine loading test result lately. My iodine excretion level is 76% but my Fluoride level is 1.5mg/24hr(normal reference range should be less than 1.3mg/24hr). Can fluoride affect the iodine excretion result?

    Thank you for your answering.

        Dr.Brownstein,

“Abnormalities of the oxidation of iodine can result in the production of anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies (Anti-TPO).”

It seems like fluoride inhibited iodine and caused my iodine excrete by urine and thus resulted high saturation level at 76%. Is that action also mean that my thyroid gland is now occupied by fluoride (in place of iodine) and this abnormalities of the oxidation of FAKE IODINE (fluoride)result in the production of anti-TPO (I have hashimoto’s thyroiditis and high level of antibodies)?

Can Celtic sea salt release fluoride out of the body?

Besides, TSH can stimulates NIS, we need NIS to pump iodine into our cell.

            1) If TSH rises during iodine supplementation, is that mean iodine can enter the cell?

            2) If TSH doesn’t rise during iodine supplementation, is that mean iodine can’t enter the cell and wash out from my body or a NIS defect that needs to be corrected?

          • Author Icon

            Hudson.
I have not found increasing salt to increase F excretion–and I have looked for this.
            1. Yes. you need TSH to stimulate NIS.
            2. Not necessarily. It depends how much iodine is already there–lower amounts would be expected to produce a larger TSH response.

Dr. B – What is your guidance on iodine supplementation for people who’ve had a thyroidectomy? How does the iodine/iodide relationship work for those people? Some health sites on the internet say that you don’t need supplementation without a thyroid, I know that is not correct. I’ve searched but can’t find any information about this.

    • Author Icon

      Mike,
The thyroid only holds a small percentage of the body’s total iodine storage. Whether you have a thyroid or not, you have skin, heart, lungs, adrenal glands, etc., that all require iodine. In fact, every cell in the body needs and requires iodine. Saying you don’t need iodine if you don’t have a thyroid gland is…FAKE NEWS!

When I was 28 which was in 2012 I was diagnosed with a toxic multinodular goiter, which means I had an enlarged thyroid gland and 4 hot nodules on my thyroid. I did all the research I possibly could handle, but I found very little information on my specific thyroid condition. My diagnosis was one seen primary in the elderly. Well, I was only sub-clinically hyperthyroidaccording to alm my blood tests, but I had a lot of uncomfortable symptoms that fell under both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid categories. I was desperate to feel better and made the decision to have the radioactive iodine treatment instead of surgery. I became hypothyroid after awhile and my hyperthyroid symptoms went away completely. Boy, do I regret my decision. I feel even worse now, and that’s whether Im on meds or not. I wish I knew that being partially hyperthyroid felt better than being completely hypothyroid. Being and feeling hypothyroid is somewhat torturous even.

Currently I’m taking Cytomel and Levothyroxine.
I’m wondering…… Is it possible to regain thyroid function after radioactive iodine treatment. 🤞🏻

      Hi Dr B,

I have had a recent mass outbreak of cherry angiomas, literally everywhere in the last few months. Of course I started researching and came across the bromine connection and your iodone work, I have just purchased your book but yet to read it. I have been vegan for 1yr and 10months and have alot of iodone deficiency symptoms, my iron, B12, vit D levels are all normal but I am living in a constant state of fatigue with brain fog, poor memory, low lido and depression. I went to my Doctor here in Australia to ask for an Iodine level test and they said they’ve never heard of it…so I guess I’m here asking you if it is safe for me to start supplementing iodone, I have some Lugols half strength but have no idea of the dosage. Does your book touch on cherry angiomas and would it help to apply liquid iodine topically?

Hi. Had started the protocol. All the supplements for about a month first. Added Iodine. Started low for a month. Nothing. Went up on dose to 25. Then a month later 50. Finally my dense breast tissue started to resolve. Body temp increased. No longer freezing! Hair loss stopped. But in a few short days I gained 12 lbs dropping back to 3mg has not helped with the weight gain. It remains. And no, my diet has not changed at all. There’s no reason for the gain except iodine increases Have been doing salt loading.,. Also, my throat is definitely more swollen. My biggest question now is did I create a hypo thyroid issue? Did the iodine .

Thanks for the fast response. I really appreciate what you are doing getting thr word out about Iodine. I also got some unrefined salt that I am using b/c of your advice.

A bit about me for anyone reading that might be looking to see how other people are doing on iodine supplementation.

The 50mg of iodine per day helps me think through things more in terms of what I eat and planning my day. Also, I can think more high level about my situation in life. I feel less hyper active.

I have a family history of thyroid issues on my father’s side. I have had adhd my entire life.

I have only been doing the high dose of lugols solution for one week.

Hoping the iodine helps me enough that I can get a job that requires thinking and thus higher pay.

Only down side so far is the clear thinking usually lasts only half the day.

It should be interesting to see how it effects my health long term.

I wish I knew about this a long time ago.

Also doing a low carb low sugar diet now and trying to consume more fats and proteins instead.

I started reading about Iodine deficiency about a year ago, and started using 2 x 150 micogram tablets a day. Then started making my own Lugol’s Iodine: Iodine crystals 10g & Potassium Iodide 20g in 200ml of distilled water. I drink about 2ml of this solution in a glass of distilled water every morning (12,5mg iodine). It has been going fine the past 4-5 months (clear skin, better sleep, more lucid dreams, and no more hair loss). Problem is… A few weeks ago I started waking up with a swollen throat and a neck that feels thick and tender. What is causing this? Should I stop taking this mixture altogether? Please advise?

I was finally diagnosed with Iodine deficiency a year ago after 18 months of testing what was “wrong” with me. My blood levels were at 40 (in-range was said to be 52-100) my doc put me on an Iodine supplement (.225mg) I felt better for a little while and got my blood levels to 50 but still never felt great. And even on the supplement my levels fell back to 42 in January. Thankfully I found your book about 6 weeks ago and bought the supplement Iodoral (12.5mg) and took 1 for a week then 2 for the second week and I felt better immediately. After the second week my blood levels tested 482! That’s almost 5x what the “in-range” levels should be. I stopped the supplement 2 days ago And now I’m tired and sluggish again even with these high numbers. My question: what is the target blood level for normal Iodine levels? Is it dangerous to have levels as high as mine? Should I stop the supplement? I appreciate any other info you can give me.

    • Author Icon

      Colleen,
Blood levels of I are inadequate after one starts taking iodine. There are no blood reference ranges for I when someone is taking it. The blood reference ranges are useful only for those not supplementing with I. I have stated that in my book and articles. It is best to work with a doc who is iodine-knowledgeable.

We are preparing another manuscript for publication of an RCT we conducted with women between 18-45 showing that 90% of them to be iodine deficient at baseline.

      Dr. DiMarco,
LOVED your article. Unbelievable that this tragedy just keeps on going. Almost like nobody cares. My research through both spot urine iodine and iodine loading tests show over 96% low.
I can’t wait to see your next article,

        Hi Dr Brownstein,

I am wondering if low iodine can cause hair loss. I have been suffering from low body temperature and lowered T3 as well as high blood sugar. Since taking 50 mgs of Iodoral per day, my blood sugars are lower and my temperature is climbing, but I still have to eat relatively low carbohydrates to keep my weight down and blood glucose down. Just wondering how iodine relates to hair loss.

Love reading your Blogs. I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. I refused the synthetic Thyroxine, prescribed in Northern Ireland, U.K. I said I wanted to continue taking Lugol’s iodine drops, but increase number of drops gradually to eight a day. Dr. Admitted all he knew about iodine was what he learned at senior school. Other doctor knew nothing, and asked if that was what was given to pigeons? I couldn’t answer that question. However, both doctors have several times taken blood test for my thyroid, and it is STABLE, and has been since 2013. I continue with Lugol’s drops, 15%.
So, I highly recommend this treatment, but presume it wouldn’t be suitable for those already on Thyroxine.
Thank you for this wonderful Blog, which I plan to share with a friend, who has young married daughters .

This blog post lists recommended iodine in mg… Could you mean mcg? Most sources I can find online recommend 150mcg / day for non-pregnant, non-nursing adults. Thank you for clarification on if “mg” was a typo or not.

    • Author Icon

      Dawn,
I wrote mg (not mcg) for the reason that mg doses of iodine are what is needed in today’s world. Please refer to my book,

I know that you recommendstarting to take iodine prior to pregnancy. Can it be started while pregnant? If so what is your recommendation for dosing?

    • Author Icon

      Carol,
I do not recommend starting iodine if pregnancy has already started. The reason is that there is no defense if something goes wrong and there is no literature to support or oppose this. Having said that I have had many patients who become pregnant and take it on their own and I have not had a single problem reported to me.

What are the symptoms of low iodine levels? I have no thyroid gland, take levothyroxine everyday, and get my levels checked by my physician. However,I feel fatigued all the time, can sleep around the clock,am extremely depressed.

    • Author Icon

      Virginia,
The same symptoms that hypothyroidism can cause can be attributable to iodine. Fibrocystic breasts or cysts anywhere in the glandular tissue can also be related to low iodine. Again, I have written much more about this in my book.

your comment “…or cysts anywhere in the glandular tissue can also be related to low iodine.” – would include Pineal cysts… ? At 65 y.o. I had an obstructive, hydrocephalus-inducing 19mm cyst, since reduced by half. Good excuse to check my iodine intake.
        Thanks !

      Hi Virginia,

I had been taking levoxyl for a number of years – still was losing hair, lost my eyebrows. crazy heavy mensus, pre-menopausal at 38, and had a heart attack and threw a clot at 42. Took care of the mensus problem with black cohash root. After that, I cut out all soy from my diet, and eliminated all intake of fluoride, bromide, and chloride from food sources and water. My next thyroid level check startled my doc, as my ‘level was improving’ – which vastly puzzled him -but he did speak of the possibility of getting off the meds. His method of stopping the meds didn’t work for me. (I fired him for yelling at me for not following his method of meds reduction.) Instead, I very slowly reduced my levoxyl, taking 6 months to taper down to nothing, and began supplementing with iodine. I researched and added other supplements which I identified as lacking, (after all, who knows your symptoms better than you) and further amended my diet. It’s been working for me for 10 years now… and I’ve not seen a doctor since.

    Dr. Brownstein,

You have brought Medicine and I appreciate you! I mention you in my own book and with clients, as well as many Doctors to fail to see the connection and their own “Iodophobia!” I get that word thanks to you! Thank you! Again, I appreciate you! I also taught Thyroid Madness at our local Whole Foods!

I am on natural thyroid supplement 110mg daily. I have been taking a thyroid support capsule by pure encapsulations which has potassium iodide 150mcg. That is not enough it seems? Is it necessary to take other things with the iodine? Our water is not fluoridated.

      Marg,
In today’s toxic world, my experience has shown that mg doses of iodine are needed.

    Hello Dr. Brownstein,

I have Hashimoto’s disease. Do you recommend taking iodine in this case? If yes, how much?

    Thank you!

    • Author Icon

      Lucy,
Hashimoto’s disease forms from a lack of iodine. My partners and I have used iodine for over 15 years with great success for it. For proper dosing, I will refer you to find an iodine-literate doctor.

I have hashimotos. Amy Myers and Isabella Wentz (both have this disease), have researched and shown that high dose iodine makes this worse. My own studies show a split-some say they feel better, some say they feel worse and it made their antibodies go up more. If I were to guess based on all of the papers, web-sites, etc I have read, its probably 60-40 against excess iodine. Most say keep it in the 200-400 mcg a day range with hashis.

Currently that is the amount I try to get. Can you explain this disparity and how there can be so many studies (natural Dr.s opinions) showing the opposite of what you are saying on iodine in auto immune response to it? Thanks

    • Author Icon

      Darin,
I have written extensively about this in my book. Iodine levels have fallen significantly over the last 40 years. During the same time iodine levels have dropped, autoimmune thyroid disorders have increased epidemically. That simple explanation disproves the idea that iodine causes Hashimoto’s disease.

I cannot agree more with Dr. Brownstein! I personally take 50mg and more each and every day, and have been doing so for a number of years. I will always take it. I have great energy and sleep wonderfully. There is so much misinformation out there about this hugely important mineral. Please don’t fear it. Take it!

    Dr. Brownstein,

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos disease last summer and put on Synthroid. I am currently 16 wks pregnant and my dr. upped my Synthroid to 88 mcg. Can I take Lugo tabs I’m conjunction or will that cause problems. I really don’t want to be on Synthroid the rest of my life, and want to know if there is something natural I can be doing/taking in its place?

I’d love to see further (independent) research done to better identify “proper dosage”. We have well respected nutritionally oriented doctors like Alan Gaby publishing notes indicating the common dosage of 12.5 mg or more per day is excessive. If a “moderate” dosage (3-6 mg/day) has a 11% rate of “side effects” it seems we really need to pin this down better.

      John,
I have hundreds of citations in my book and, between my partners–thousands of patients. The research is already there.

I have Graves Disease; my thyroid gland is intact. From what you are saying I might need more iodine? Not the way I understand it. I’ve always been told to stay away from iodine. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am now into year 9 or 10 of my second remission. I also take meds for hypertension and am in 10th day of no diazepam after weaning off over a period of years.

In your patients taking 25-50 mg. iodine per day, have you had any thyroid storm issues?

    • Author Icon

      Mir,
I have not encountered thyroid storm. However, there are a few patients who do not do well with iodine. They are few and far between. There are a few that don’t do well with vitamin C and other items as well.

What do you believe is an optimal level of iodine in the body? I supplement with iodine and am tested annually.

    • Author Icon

      Tonya,
Everybody is different and should be treated as such. Some do well with larger doses, some with lower. As with anything. Iodine should be part of a holistic treatment regimen not taken as sole remedy.

I have been convinced for a long time that I have iodine deficiency. However, my endocrinologist will not test for it, and they no longer sell the iodine skin test at the pharmacy. Are there any labs/tests that I can request on my own to check the levels? I certainly don’t want to over-supplement. Thanks for your help!

What if a person has thyroditis and nodules on thyroid. Surely that would be a sign a person was iodine deficient right?

Where can I get iodine from?

    • Author Icon

      Carrie,
In food, the highest source of iodine is found in seafood. However, the pollution of the oceans has lowered the amount of iodine in this food source. You can supplement with iodine in the form of Lugol’s solution or tableted Lugol’s solution. One form of tableted iodine is Lugo tabs. They are available from my office at http://www.centerforholisticmedicine.com.
